I got back home today after my annual Christmas and New Year jaunt to Paphos on the lovely island of Cyprus. As many regular members will know, I’ve been in the habit of only taking one watch on a trip, and almost invariably for this one it has been the Ulysse Nardin.
However, I have the impression that a service may be required, since the timekeeping is a little erratic. I therefore decided to resort to my faithful Sealander GMT. I have had this watch for over three years, and it has been a regular companion in the Greek islands, and has never failed to impress.
I did put a hybrid strap in the suitcase but never put it on the watch – it stayed on the bracelet throughout. I did some good walks on the days when the weather was fine enough, though Christmas itself was a bit grim, with heavy rain and lightning storms. This watch is perfectly happy in the sea or a swimming pool, but I didn’t go in either one this time. We went into a few decent restaurants, and it always looks very good with a nice shirt.
Being an automatic, and the only watch I take, it doesn’t need a lot of maintenance and the occasional check revealed that it was keeping time to within two seconds per day - chronometer performance. Yes, it has a GMT function, but as we have mentioned on other threads recently, it’s a bit irrelevant apart from the few hours when you are flying between destinations.
I have said before that I think this is the best Christopher Ward watch I have ever owned. I’m very fond of the Twelve Ti (it came to Malta and Morocco this year) but this really does take some beating as an all round holiday watch.
A very good holiday watch indeed!

Welcome back! I’m sure the dull, grey, damp conditions here are a perfect antidote to the warm, bright and (mainly dry!) weather in Cyprus Those watches are two very fine companions - my black Sealander often accompanies me on my trips. The Ulysses is a lovely looking watch.

Welcome home Steve, glad you had another enjoyable trip away.
I’ve also done the trick of taking one watch with a selection of straps, only to leave it on the same one for the whole holiday.

Re: A very good holiday watch indeed!
100% Steve!
I've also had my (white dial) Sealander GMT as the only watch I need when travelling. GMT function, hey-ho, but it's a Sealander with a bit of something extra going on but not too much. Totally on-point. And you don't have to worry about it being some sort of target in places strange.
That said, the UN is a cracking watch that I associate with AVO by default. Gotta love a 'big/double date' just for starters

The more I look at and read about the Sealander GMT, the more I’m certain that this is the watch for me as my daily work watch. Has the looks and presence and yet retains its practicality and wouldn’t matter too much should it get knocked arao7nd a bit.

I really want one too but have yet to resolve whether it should be the white or the black version!Time goes by wrote: ↑Wed Jan 08, 2025 9:37 am The more I look at and read about the Sealander GMT, the more I’m certain that this is the watch for me as my daily work watch. Re: A very good holiday watch indeed!
Agree! My hunter green GMT on green canvas was a great holiday watch-although I sold as found the green a bit limiting for regular wear. Have a few other GMTs in the collection with white and black dials (C60 Anthropocene, C60 Mk2 GMT with black dial & green bezel, C8 UTC) hence going for green but agree (again) on white or black being a great allrounder. Was hoping to find a C63 GMT COSC LE silver sunburst dial GMT at some point but feels unlikely…
And agree again (again) on C63 being a good all rounder! My FLE ‘23 is as comfortable in smart environs on bracelet as it is casually on a nylon strap.

Re: A very good holiday watch indeed!
I consider most of my 100m WR robust watches as good holiday watches. All being suitable for any activity I am likely to do on holiday, whether in a warm or temperate climate.
I often take a GMT or three on holiday, albeit they tend not to end up with an equal amount of wear…

Re: A very good holiday watch indeed!
I know some people end up wishing they had taken an additional or different watch, but once I’m on the way to the airport I just stop thinking about them. I even forget to take watch pics in key locations.
Someone in the group actually asked about the orange hand on mine and ended up getting a lecture on the orbital mechanics of the GMT hand. He glazed over and bought me a beer to shut me up. I think he was quite interested in watches, though; he had some kind of diver jobbie on.
