Are they - is this right?
It depends on how you define "dress watch" I guess. "Can be used with a suit" and "dress watch" are two very different things in my eyes. The C5 Slimline is the most dressy watch CW has.

Is the C9 5day a dress watch? Nah, not really. Can it be used for formal occasions? Absolutely.

Same goes for the jump hour and single pusher. I use the JH as a semi daily wearer. No problem at all. Though my usual attire is denim and a shirt. Would I use it in a hoodie? Probably not. Does this make it a dress watch? Still no...

Good news. I dont mind a 42-43mm watch if it is styled thoughtfully, but I also like a nice 40mm for certain occasions. You can still have great presence in a watch at that size, so long as it is also thoughtfully designed. I think the 5 day auto would look fantastic as a 40mm.

Cheers,
Jack.

Good point, take for example the Monaco Calibre 12 at 40mm. :D

Why this constant pressure on CW to produce watches of varying sizes to meet every sized wrist? CW identifies its target market and produces watches to achieve a realistic level of sales. When the Forum is given an opportunity of designing a watch to meet members aspirations sales struggle to reach 60 to 70! There are hundreds of quality watches in the marketplace from 32mm to 48mm circ. and 5mm to 18mm thickness. Take your pick!

I guess this is all about context. As I have quite big wrists at, 21.5cm. I find my 42mm looks very well proportioned, I also have a 38mm as well which is a little small on my wrist.
Also I am only 26 and i think us younger types do seem to prefer bigger watches, for example I would really like 44mm or 47mm Panerai.

Same here!

Every watch I buy, I have to purchase additional links for the bracelet, and replace the strap for a longer one.

My C11 would get worn a lot more if it were 40mm instead of 42. :(

I agree with Tooks above. This is my biggest frustration with CWL.

Also, in my mind there is no question that all the C9 watches are dress watches (except the C9 FLE). The C900SP is also a (massive) dress watch, but the C900WT isn't.

I have the same problem Richard, but in the reverse. Most CW straps are too big for me, especially if they have a deployment clasp. My most recent purchase, the C5 Slimline came with a standard pin buckle and fit me fine.

But that is my preference and I respect the fact that it may not be the same for others. I'll never let the size or style of strap or bracelet preclude me from purchasing a watch.

As to the size of watch, I have recently set for myself an arbitrary limit of 42mm. Although I'm sure I could be persuaded to go a bit larger if the right watch presented itself. As others have stated, several factors determine whether a watch 'wears big' or 'small'.

42-43mm is fine for me, in fact I'm disappointed that the C3/C30 isn't a little bigger. I had a C3 and it looked diddy and my wrists aren't that big!

Another gorilla wristed chap here who is typing this while wearing a 47mm diameter, 17mm tall piece that feels as comfortable as can be. I took out my Mkii Vantage this morning and really struggled to wear it since I am in the first flushes with the new piece, so simply put it back in the watch box and strapped on the behemoth again.

I am minded to disagree that there is a lack of choice offered by CWL. Sure, there are many pieces that are 42mm and bigger, but there are a healthy number of smaller watches. In this way, I would say CWL have a good balance of sizes, with more choice proposed, if the various chats and forum messages are anything to go by.

I wear my C9 on the one but last hole and my C8 is the same but on the new CW tan leather. Happy for CW to produce more of the same.

I guess this shows we all think differently. For me, albeit I don't get the whole ethos of 'dress watch', most of the C9's aren't. I really like the C9 5-day automatic, but if defining it as a dress watch, I would never have the need for one and wouldn't buy it. I'd wear the blue/grey dial version as an everyday casual watch.
