10 years on - thoughts about a One Watch

Post by missF »

A One Watch is the one watch you want to wear all the time.

Well, in your case, you've explained how crucial this watch is to you managing your life, so it's rather more than just a favourite watch. It's provides a function you now can't do without, and which other watches don't provide.

@missF
It’s a totally personal thing. For me, after long consideration, it’s a non-thing. If you make it stick I congratulate you. I’ll stick with my box of goodies. :D

I see lots of dots underneath the main picture of the moonphase. Are there more images that are not loading or is this for dramatic effect?

Nonetheless, I think most WIS would have a One Watch in mind but the tricky part is that there's always something else that comes along. Hence, I'm wondering what a One Watch means in this context;

1. One watch you wear most often in a collection of other watches. The One Watch may change as part of the collection.
2. One watch you wear all the time with no other watches in the collection. Would consider flipping but you only ever have a single watch.
3. One watch you wear all the time with no other watches in the collection. No intention of changing the One Watch. You're done. Finito.

I'd say I'm in group 1;
  • My most often worn watch is a cheap beater
  • I'm gradually reducing my watch collection (three is the magic number) but couldn't imagine having only a single watch
  • The One Watch changes throughout the year (e.g. if working, on hols, etc.)

Yes - dramatic effect :lol:
I'm having a laugh at my own expense, because previously, any time I posted something referencing One Watches or What I've Learned In Ten Years On The Forum I'd have written a dissertation. This time it's easier. Rather than debating what watch you 'could' wear all the time in any situation, I've just discovered a watch that I 'want' to wear - all the time. It has 'become' my One Watch. I've said before - a watch can 'tick all the boxes' you like, and you might never get in with it. This watch doesn't 'tick all the boxes' but I don't want to take it off for any other. :D

I think I’ve reached a point where I might struggle to identify The One in my collection. I go long stretches with just one watch, but invariable start to get a bit bored and switch things up. But is that more because I can switch things up? If my C65 Trident Vintage were my only watch, would I be perfectly content? I think I would.

Oddly enough, the watch getting the most wrist time since retirement, the “grab & go” without a thought, is my Casio Royale! The practicality of it can’t be beat. I find my self using the alarm, the timer, and the countdown functions with regularity. I don’t need to give it a second thought whether wearing it to clean around the house and do yard work. It’s a bit of a SAK of watches and can take a beating. The “One Watch?” Maybe. I might need to get the SKXMod case with sapphire crystal for it.

Had I bought my.latest watch, the Oris Bicolor, first, I could imagine wearing only that, but as it is, I don't think I could wear only one. I might pick the Oris to wear when I am watching "Highlander" since there can be only one. :D

Clancy Brown who was The Kurgan in Highlander was also warder Byron Hadley in Shawshank. 2 great roles. :D

@missF

If you compare your Moonphase with the new aventurine Moonphase are there aspects you would change? Would you actually like to design a blend of both watches to get the ultimate blend for you?

I think they're very different watches and while I love the class of the aventurine (it's a beautiful beautiful moonphase), I love my more 'functional' Moonglow. I did say that the Moonglow doesn't tick 'all' the boxes for me (a day function would be the seal on the deal). But - my ultimate moonphase watch wouldn't be a kind of mash up of features from both - they stand in their own in their different styles. But - there are two detail things I would like to change about the Moonglow as it stands. One is that I'd get rid of the red tip on the seconds hand - I think it's such a bold striking design that it could absolutely handle being completely monochrome for maximum effect. And the other is that I think it could do with a slightly different 12 index (or maybe even 12,3,6 and 9). Because the rising and setting moons are always aligned out of any vertical or horizontal line, and because the 12 index is only set against the 31 of the date ring, and because the hour and minute hands are always wherever they are too, it takes me an added fraction of a second to orientate myself when I look at the watch. I think that bolder indices to orientate the dial while all the features are whirling round in various circles would help a lot. It's a first world problem. This is my favourite moonphase ever. Erm, I'm keeping my eyes open for future moonphase developments from CW or others :lol: :thumbup:

Seeing as I can’t limit myself to even just one of the Worn & Wound C65 LEs, the concept of “one watch” is beyond me. I’ve had at least two watches since I was 10; I’m 56 now and I won’t go against my tradition. :)

I’m really happy for you Lindsey that you’ve (hopefully) found your one watch.

I’ve got a few “one” watches at the moment, I just can’t decide between them…….

My view is each to their own Lindsey. That you have found your one watch is great news. It’s a watch that for you does all (well almost all) that you have looked for, that has to be a good result. :thumbup:

Whilst I have a few that I would be happy to wear for weeks, or months on end, I also know that I am not really restricted to “the ones”, as I could still pick up a different watch if I really wanted to.

Enjoy your watch world nirvana. :)
