surely though the police dont need guns if there are laws that prohibit them?
the UK was very much like America in our love and appreciation for Firearms, in fact before the Govt of 1924 feared a revoloution there were no firearms laws that rerstricted the ownership of any type of firearm, only sensible laws that targeted the "missuse" of firearms,
The thing that annoysme is that fact the police feel the need to be armed with prohibited firearms for thier own protection (CS gas / Pepper spray is also Banned) yet the average law abiding person on the street is not...
one rule for them, one rule for criminals and another rule for the law abiding.
however regarding that petition / desire - as I understand it, it is not about anyone being allowed handguns - but about being able to use them in controlled situations in the UK - at present our olympic shooters have to go abroad just to practise - not ideal...
A few years ago I went with my brother in Chile into a shopping centre - into a sports shop and through the back into a gun club where we were able to shoot revolvers / pistols without any ID / issue etc. - sounds awful, but if you think about it, there is really no issue - the gun club owned the guns / a member of their staff was always with us / we had to sign the bullets in and out - all very informal - yet very tight... I see no issue with being able to do that in the UK - quite reasonable really... can't personally see any other reason to own pistols - so no issue with individuals being banned from owning them...
the issue with pistols is that they are so easy to conceal... rifles / shotguns are a little more difficult...
as to owning guns at all - no issues there - I own 5: 4 x shotguns / 1 x air-rifle - they are locked in a secure, wall mounted, cabinet in a house with alarms / cctv / etc and used carefully... I have taught a lot of children around the age of 10-11 to shoot (they listen carefully at that age - thrilled to be abllowed to do it) - if you are careful then they are safe to use - yes tragedies occur, however rarely is the gun the issue - it is a tool - you can't stop people buying kitchen knives / etc. you could slit someone's throat with a sailing knife / penknife - do we ban every thing not made from rubber?!
I shoot quite a lot in the UK - and have taken guns abroad - now that was fun, checking in at Heathrow with 6 guns
I was also shooting with a pistol in the UK last year (and could have done this year had I been free) - Sandhurst, army organised competition...
to be honest, a gun is a tool, issues (if any) are with the user, not the tool...

Re: My Trident & 9mm
See what you have gone and done n1ck?
I didn't have a problem with the composition of the OP's picture until I noticed the bullets were badly placed. They could have been set better so it appeared as though they had been tossed down in a nonchalant fashion as opposed to a careless fashion. Then I saw that the parkerization on the 9mm was altogether too evenly worn, as opposed to having a stronger story to tell about the life of the gun. Then finally, I thought the Trident, the centrepiece of the shot, was a little off-centre, making it an off-centre-centrepiece and the composition descended into the mundane and banal.
Nice watch though. How about a 'wristie', whatever one of those is?

Come the Zombie Apocalypse those of us who are Prepared will chuckle while the rest of you are consumed by the ambulatory dead. Not really.
There are certainly pros and cons to our judicial system, but I can only see cons to the public having access to guns of any kind?

Actually the biggest problem is the levels / contrast curve - the black has washed out because of the camera's default exposure setting averaging to 18% grey (ish) - it needs altering to give it a bit more punch!jmarchitect wrote:See what you have gone and done n1ck?

Hi n1ck - I like the leather NATO on your Trident, good for the job in hand.
Any chance of a pic with something more powerful; SA80 perhaps?

I'm manly ( or un-manly?) enough to admit I have never shot a hand gun, but I can wear the hell out of a C60 auto any day!

Congratulations. You have won the internet tonight, although I think you are being a little hard on n1ck. He is taking pictures in a warzone with the an iPad, possibly the most awkward photographic device ever made. And thanks for attempting to get this thread back on track.jmarchitect wrote:See what you have gone and done n1ck?
