C5A Mk I on perforated strap

Post by asqwerth »

Due to my small wrists and the fact that the straps that come with the C5s are REALLY long, I find that the deployant clasp (whether the single-fold or the newer butterfly one) never fits that well. The fold(s) of the clasp on the inside of the strap get in the way of a good fit and I have to wear the watch loosely on my wrist.

In any case, the original strap had been pretty well-used by leebman, the previous owner, so I decided to get a new strap with a matte buckle, rectifying the one thing that bugged me about the MK I design - it had a brushed steel case but a very polished and shiny deployant clasp.

I have to say the perforated strap gives a nice lift to the look of the watch, and it sort of adds to the circle motif that the Mk I had going.

I like that strap too, asqwerth, may I ask who makes it? I take it from your photos that you live in warmer climes. Which I was still posted overseas. Blighty is particularly chilly right now.

Yes, I've seen the news about the horrible weather in your part of the world. My commiserations.

As for the strap, I'm afraid it's a generic thingy from a local watch shop who swapped the polished buckle it came with with a brushed steel one.

After examining it carefully, I'm not sure whether the thin layer on top that's sewn onto the thick leather base/back is really leather or is synthetic. Doesn't smell of leather, but I can't really tell for sure either way (usually I can). It looks and wears fine, but the uncertainty irks me a little.

Thanks for coming back to me. I'll look for a replacement strap for my C5 on the usual websites. Whatever happens to your current strap, at least you now know that a perforated strap looks really good and there are plenty of decent quality straps available on the net.

Asqwerth, now you've had your mk1 aviator for a while, how do you rate it compared with your mk2? Do you prefer one to the other, or prefer aspects of one to the other?

I find myself wearing the Mk1 much more than the (cream) Mk2. The Mk1 is a much more creative and original take on the pilot's watch, and has a charming quirkiness to it. However, I still like the Mk2 and prefer its hands - they are bigger, easier to read, have more lume, and I prefer their shape.

Somehow, I feel as if the Mk2 is more formal than the Mk1, and goes better with its original dark brown strap + deployant clasp than with, say, a more casual tan brown strap.

On the other hand, I thought the Mk1 was OK on its original black strap + deployant, but really came to life on more casual straps.

I'm more likely to wear the Mk2 for more "serious" work days or when I have a meeting (the cream of the dial is a wonderful shade and looks great with the dark brown strap). Mk1 is for more "dress down" work days and casual wear.
