Rolex is what they call a manufacture, that means they build their own movements, no modified ETA's....
Rolex sub-brand Tudor did use modified ETA's in the past...

I would wish that they'd make the movements (which they do themselves, and which is what they are good at), and someone else would design the watches (which they do themselves, and which they screw up big time with alarming consistency).
Man with one watch, always know time. Man with many watches, never sure.

You have a way with words Peter, I like that!peterh wrote:...and which they screw up big time with alarming consistency).
And I like/love some of the Rolex-designs, I wear my Rolex GMT just as often as my C5's!
The sub is another variation which I love!!! Different people, different tastes!

Some designs are breathtaking and then again some designs are breathtaking.

As I said: with alarming consistency. They don't always screw up...
Every now and then, a watchmaker who's on the Rolex payroll hides in a dark corner of a cave in the Alps, and crafts something without the marketing dept. getting a chance to randomly spray it with baroque details... so they CAN do it.
I still fail to see what is so special about the Submariner... as I think I may have said earlier, given the choice between a Submariner and a Planet Ocean, I'd choose the Planet Ocean without thinking twice.
Having said that, from an aesthetic standpoint, being given the choice between a Planet Ocean and an automatic Kingfisher with a kingfisher-shaped second hand and a round date window, even if money would be no object, I would probably pass on the Planet Ocean and grab the Kingfisher.
If we'd factor in movement quality, however... Planet Ocean it must be. If money would be no object. And even then I'd grab the Kingfisher just as well. Too bad about the second hand being voted away by popular consensus.
But we're getting off-topic - this is "other brands".
Yes, Rolex make their own movements, and they're bloody good at it. While they may be conventional, they are VERY well executed - best in class.

I wish there could be a watch manufacturer with Rado design, Rolex movements, Christopher Ward pricing and Steinhart customer service. One can only dream.
