My mother was a WIS!

Post by Amor Vincit Omnia »

Well, not really...but she DID have a beater!!

I knew about the little rose gold plated Rotary. I bought it for her 80th birthday and she came with me to choose it. It was on her wrist when she moved into the care home and was among her effects that they gave back to me when she died.

When clearing things out in the house I found this mid sized Limit, keeping good time and in working order, if a little bashed and grimy. I hadn't seen it before and mentioned it to a close friend of hers.

"Oh, yes" replied the friend, "she wore that one most of the time. She wore the little gold one when you were visiting or she was going out somewhere nice, because didn't want to damage it doing housework &c."

That made me smile!

Maybe my mum was too.

Clearing her house in 2014, we found 27 watches. All of which were probably worth 100GBP, so no little hidden gems.

We did however, find an empty Steradent tube filled with 1GBP coins. About 50 in total.

That's really touching that she cherished it like that.
I miss all the great things that may never be.

You cannot put a value on a memory like this. You shall forever have the watches to remind you of your mother.

I could indeed keep them, Kip, and leave them sitting in a drawer, but I already have these two!

I think she would have preferred them to be worn and used as intended. The Rotary is a sweet little watch and has a new battery and strap, so I think I shall try to rehome it. If someone gets use and pleasure from it that will be a brilliant outcome.

Nice find and little memory to go with it. I think what we call beaters, the older generation call "an every day watch" :)
