Negotiated Settlement

Post by Tyke »

After my refusal of an Omega PO GMT my wife is now pressing me for an alternative and after some arm twisting (from her) we have come to an agreement that I should find a watch up to £1500 for my 50th which is about all I can cope with her spending on me. So the hunt is on;

I'm after a dive watch so I can splash about in it, that will effectively become my daily wearer, so robust
Has to be new
Not a GMT otherwise it ends up being a direct PO substitute :(
Happy with most colours so brightness not a problem
Can cope with anything sized up to 44/45mm as have worn a Makaira 500 in the past
One final thing....... can't be a CW, so no C60's

My initial thoughts turn towards an Oris Aquis but I have no experience of them and - any views welcome on these and any thoughts on alternatives to this are most welcome.

Me, assuming the 1500 is a strict limit, and it has to be new, I would go for the Sinn u1

Tough as old boots, a proper tool watch and will outlast you!

Oris Aquis is a lovely watch and is my "go to" watch.

Have you thought about a Hamilton? I do like my Broadway Chrono, although I wouldn't class it as a daily wearer.

Can't second this enough. Love mine. Or maybe a UX if you want something a little different from a tech standpoint. Oil filled quartz. Still tough as nails and a little unique looking w/o being weird.

Interesting Sinn, never really looked at those but I will investigate them. As for criteria, yes must be new, she doesn't want it to be pre-owned as it's a special gift and I can understand that.

First thoughts: Oris, as you stated.

Second thoughts, and ignoring your stipulations: second-hand Omega SMP / GMT

For me it would have to be that Oris 65 ^^^^^^^ in 42mm flavour. Or a slightly left field option is the new Alpina Seastrong Heritage. 42mm and smidge under £1,500 new.

Prefer the aquis style over the oris 65's nice as they are. Had a look at the lower end Alpina's at Ogden's in York, that one is a real looker but was taken with the Yachtimer Tactical Planner which is in the price range from a couple of web sellers.

The Longines Legend not really for me but the Hydroconquests look attractive so thanks for that call, the Stowa's are certainly distinctive and some are really vivid, again a brand I've not paid a lot of attention to but will do from now on.

This has certainly opened my eyes as it's a price sector (£1k - £2.5k) in the market I haven't explored fully before - always looked up to about £1k and then dreamed of Omega's and the like at £3k+

Tough call to pick one out, I think it will call for a watch day trying things on to narrow it down a bit, hoping one speaks to me.

I really liked my Aquis blue sunray and is a very good quality watch. The Alpina watches diver and sailing watches are just as good in quality and older models can be found for a bargain. Well, at least in the US.

The new Alpiner 4 is not marketed as a dive watch but has the robustness and water resistance you're looking for. That one is on the top of my list. It's £990.00 in the Uk so well below budget.
