Re: Story Behind Omega Watch - Tom Hardy - Dunkirk
Thanks for that - very interesting article.
I confess, while I saw the watch on the screen, I didn't have time to dwell on what it was (well, there was a lot going on while scanning my eyes across a 28 double-decker bus-sized screen!) and missed the Omega name. So it's great to see it here in detail.
I'm probably going to go again with some family members so will keep an eye out for the relevant scenes.

Impressive attention to detail getting the real thing, but why did the RAF request such a small dial and huge bezel? I'd not have guessed it was a flyer from looking at it, unless it's 50mm which seems unlikely so long ago.

Back then dials were only as big as their movements (as they should be). Cases were made by other companies and then the watch was assembled. I'm guessing in those days a rotating bezel was a very new technology so it was probably made a little bigger to work reliably back then.suicidal_orange wrote:Impressive attention to detail getting the real thing, but why did the RAF request such a small dial and huge bezel? Allied WwII pilots watches were 32 - 36mm on average. Only the Germans really wore big pilots watches that we recognise today.
I dont really see it as being period correct as it would have looked brand new. Would the lume have been that colour back then?
I miss all the great things that may never be.

I was happy to see a watch prominently featured in this movie, as they often do in Christopher Nolan films. A quite unusual piece as well that caught my attention.
I dream of the day when "tool" watches like this are again under 35mm. If this baby was good enough for my grandparents' generation putting their lives on the line, it should be good enough for the average weekend warrior today.

Brief article about the film and watch on WatchPro today.
Saw the film this afternoon. Evocative, mesmerising, relentless. I was still shaking an hour or so afterwards.
Thoroughly recommended.
