Gold on black?
Call me a Bluff Old Traditionalist (AVO, you are a Bluff Old Traditionalist!). Well, I have realised that for a long time all my gold watches (or those with an element of gold in them such as the MMXV) seem to have gravitated naturally to tan straps. My steel cased watches tend, on the other hand, to end up on black straps. I think this is partly due to the fact that I tend to wear the gold watches more in summer, when I favour light coloured clothes and brown shoes, belts &c. However, when I had a C5 Mk1 I kept it on a black strap.
Needing to replace the strap on my Longines I have gone for a plain black leather from a local jewellers. Although I have the Tank, which is perfect with a dark suit, I though this might add a little dressiness to the dark wardrobe. What think you?

Re: Gold on black?
As you know, I'm no expert on gold watches.
However, I think it looks fine, and it is certainly versatile on black - although with white/light dials I have a tendency to go for brown straps.

Re: Gold on black?
Although I tend to go for brown straps myself, I do think that black straps dress up gold watches and add an element of class.
Good choice you Bluff Old Traditionalist.

Gold and black looks fine to me.
Only thought is that a pattern of some thought might look a tad better. How about Camel grain?

Re: Gold on black?
Could be, Guy. It was just an inexpensive strap from a local jeweller to see if I liked the look. The other thing is that it's 17mm which can be limiting on the High Street. I might look at Camilla, Lizzie or Allie online later.

Re: Gold on black?
I think black and gold is quite classy and goes well, I used to own one of these
Admittedly the face is black too however I think even on a white faced, gold cased watch such as the C5 it's just fine

embrace the change! gold on black looks very classy to me - and not too shocking for bluff old traditionalists either!
watching you fail in your quest for a “one watch” has been great entertainment

Re: Gold on black?
Gold on black is how I have worn my seamaster for the last 30 years ..... it was how it was given to me and I never changed it even when I was deeply tempted by some really nice brown leather ones.
I think it is a great combination but I am probably slightly biased or possibly narrow minded ....
Judging by what I have been reading on the forum it may also be time to broaden my horizons on the strap for my seamaster as well!!

Re: Gold on black?
I am slowly changing out the brown straps for black straps on all my gold watches. I think it is a nice crisp look.
Actually, thinking about it, I don't have any watches on brown straps other than my vintage gold watches. I'm more of a stainless steel and black kind of guy. My vintage gold Seamaster has had a lot more wrist time since swapping the strap on it from brown to black.
That's a gorgeous Longines Steve and, to my eyes, looks fantastic on the black. Can't quite make out the wording on the lower half of the dial. What does it say?

Re: Gold on black?
I also prefer brown straps to black as all my work shoes are brown but recently I have swapped out some of my watches, especially black dial watches in ss case onto black straps. Over time, I have started to appreciate the versatility of black straps.

Re: Gold on black?
Thank you, Phil. "Pidduck, Hanley". Hanley is the city centre of Stoke-on-Trent, where I grew up, and Henry Pidduck on Market Square (very old photo) was the best jewellers in the city. Sadly it closed in 1992 (and I hadn't lived there for years) - so when I saw this 18ct Longines from 1966 (I would have been about 9) on Black Bough a few years back I snapped it up. A link to my childhood.FloridaPhil wrote: That's a gorgeous Longines Steve and, to my eyes, looks fantastic on the black. Can't quite make out the wording on the lower half of the dial.
