C3 Malvern Chronograph Mk III Review

Post by eggtronics »

Christopher Ward released the latest iterations of their long standing Malvern range earlier this month. The obvious change was the new logo; but there’s more to the Mk3’s than just that. They feature the brand new case shape; and this model – the C3 Chronograph – has a new movement within which alters the dial configuration completely. Before, the subdials were laid out at 10-2-6, but now we have a hint of IWC Portugieser thanks to the 12-6 layout.

Costing £350, it’s still a great price for a Swiss Made chronograph, so let’s take a closer look. I’ve only had the watch for less than a week, so here are my brief thoughts.

Looks very good and svelte Josh.

Will you have to send it back or will CWL let you keep / buy it?

Thanks!

Unfortunately not. Couldn't have to for too long, had it for about a week.

Great review Josh - I was particularly interested in you pointing out the various subtleties in the watch (there is some serious attention to detail gone into this watch).

I already have two C3's (original Mk1 in the off-white/cream and a blue Mk2) but this is a step change in quality.

Might be interested if CWL come up with some other colours.

Could see it with either a mid grey dial & keep the opaline white subdials or do the reverse, mid grey dials on opaline white face, either with silver hands - hey, why not do 50 of each - panda / reverse panda? Grey something along these lines;

Ferg/Ian,

You could be right - get to use the new case and new movement.

Although I guess a lot of people wouldn't want a quartz FLE.

Maybe a C5 or C9 FLE with the new case would be a good option - different colour face, etc as CWL have limited the face options for the new case watches.

Good call Ian ;)

Yes most will vote for an automatic I guess Paul, but the C3 would make it affordable to everyone and CW would be happy as its using their new model.

Can't see it happening for an FLE being a quartz but it's certainly something CW could do as an in-house LE, similarly the blue and black versions lend themselves to a variety of mixed colour dial/sub dial versions.

Apologies for hijacking the thread but it is at east C3 related

I think a mechanical C3 is a great idea but unlikely to happen. The cost of sourcing a mechanical movement that can fit into the C3 case, which also require modification for a mechanical movement, will be very high. Of course, if CW can work it's magic and come up with one at an affordable price, I will be extremely happy. :)

Never considered a C3 auto as an option, far too much work. Any FLE is more likely to be a colouring in exercise of an existing model than a major re-work.

Never get a quartz through as an FLE, so the C3 ideas are for a CW LE or nothing.

Good size, good looks, practical, accurate, affordable...

Get one out there, I might vote for it! :D
