They were mooting Bahrain yesterday as it's on the way to Austrailia for the freight. You'd think it would involve all the teams needing to being ready earlier.
Weather would be more consistent though.

The problem is shipping spare parts and doing quick fixes for stuff. Factory to Barcelona is a "quick, get in the van and get it to the track". Bahrain isn't...

Mercedes (medium tyre) 1/2 second quicker than McLaren (Hypersofts) doesn't look too good.

It's testing. Nothing you can read into the times.

It appears that the much vaunted McLaren chassis doesn't seem to stack up once it has a comparable engine and the Honda excuse is jettisoned.

2nd test long runs and outright pace laps will give a much better idea than these shakedown and data days.

Will take a major performance upgrade to displace the big 3 given their budgets and continual development history.

We'll find out in qualifying at Melbourne!

Have just seen the testing times. They're not even in the low 1:18's yet, and it's a new track surface that's supposed to be up to 2s quicker! The engineers are talking of the layout track record falling, so maybe high 1:16... which would be incredible.

A quick look at all this years' cars on track courtesy of F1.com

Interesting how the Torro Rosso Honda sounds way less a 'bag of nails' than ever the Honda engine did in last year's McLaren.

It also managed to run 324 laps over the four days, without incident, more than any other team.

Did McLaren jump ship too soon. :o

They maybe did Guy but after 3 dire years you can't blame them.

If Honda have finally got it right, FA ain't gonna be too happy :chainsaw: :headbash:

Gary Anderson on Autosport has attempted to normalise the numbers based on each team using a soft tyre and has ranked them as follow's:

1 Red Bull 1m18.129s
2 Mercedes 1m18.383s
3 Ferrari 1m19.123s
4 Renault 1m19.373s
5 McLaren 1m19.425s
6 Haas 1m20.367s
7 Toro Rosso 1m20.418s
8 Williams 1m20.792s
9 Force India 1m21.341s
10 Sauber 1m21.771s

I'm not convinced this weeks test data can be trusted and the second test will be more telling. If the data can be relied on, then I'm sure Haas will be very happy, Williams & Force India less so.

McLaren stopped on track this morning - lets hope they find some reliability and speed!

And this is the new Formula E car that will race in the 2018/2019 season - very futuristic!

During testing most teams will run the car until the fuel tank is empty to check the fuel pickup is working correctly. Hopefully that is what this is. Be good to have McLaren back to competitiveness this year.

Agreed they need to run dry, but this was a power unit problem and Stoffel has been in the garage for the majority of the morning session.
