Perhaps the difficulty in selecting a 'best Bond' is that each played the character in a different way, not so much for their own persona but for the character of the film dictated by the Producer / Director / Social climate of the day.

It, IMHO, is also perhaps true to say that the 'best Bond' as an actor is more a reflection of the 'best Bond film' than of the portrayal of Bond.

My choice?

Connery / Craig

Final point/question - who's next?

Craig again or ???

I had read somewhere that Idris Elba was in the frame . Michael Fassbender would be a good choice IMO .

Greetings,

1. SC

2. PB

That's it.

RM was The Saint first.

IE would make an excellent Bond.

=1. Craig & Connery. Same style, different eras. (But let's forget Never Say Never Again and the toupee )
3. Dalton. Attempted similar style to above but didn't quite pull it off.
4. Moore. If all his Bonds had been up to Live and Let Die standard he could have been my No.1
5. Niven. At least he knew he was playing it for laughs
6. Lazenby. Nuff said.
7. Brosnan. He will forever be Remmington Steel!!

Just goes to show there is about as much unity over choice of Bond as there is watches!

I suppose the Hunt for Red October was ok but would have been much better without Connery. I'm just not a fan

I think it has a lot to do with the writers\directors and the timeframes the films were created in. They really influence the on-screen character.

So for me there are two different "types" of Bond - "Hard and Ruthless" and Witty and Charming" - Though these are obviously the main characteristics. All of them are a mixture of many elements :

So for "Hard and Ruthless" I'd go for

1 - Craig
2 - Connery
3- Dalton

"Witty and Charming"
1 - Moore
2 - Brosnan (Though apparently the "personal kill count" in the Brosnan films is higher than all others.. according to a chart in the kitchen where I work :D )
3 - Lazenby
4 - Niven playing it for laughs
Kevin

Experience - the thing you get just after the point you REALLY needed it.

I still think that the first three Bond films (with SC) were genre creating films, unfortunately they started to become too gadget laden and played for laughs.

I always thought DAF was meant to be a comedy action film (like the Flint films).

Personally I've always liked OHMSS and think Lazenby was setup to fail, if he'd had some help/guidance he could have been a better Bond.

As for Moore, as said before, he was just playing his usual character who was playing 007.

Let's not mention Dalton or Brosnan, these were Bonds for the American mainstream, now Craig, he's got the brutal bit down to a tee, and doesn't need loads of gadgets either.

I think IE thinks if he keeps saying "I could have been Bond" then it will come true!
At this rate the next Bond will be Tom Cruise :D
Rob

Watches are like Dictionaries; the worst is better than none, and the best cannot be expected to go quite true.

1) Connery
2) Dalton
3) Brosnan
4) Lazenby
5) Moore
6) Craig

With exception of Casino Royale which I would put in the top 5 Bond films Craigs films have been terrible, lacking whit, intelligence, fun and gadgets.

When Fassbender gets the role he will be number 2 for me.
I miss all the great things that may never be.

What about Tom Hiddleston? Night manager was almost an audition for the next Bond

Hiddleston in the Night Manager was awesome. The villain played by Hugh Laurie was succh a great role as well. Hiddleston would make an awesome Bond. I actually enjoyed that series more than most Bond movies. After so many movies, they become predicatable and there is no real story plot. There is Bond. the villain, the evil organization, the plot to take over the world, 10 different locations throughout the world and many action scenes.

But back to original question..

1. Connery
2. Brosnan
3. The other guys

Never really cared for Craig, he often just comes across as a bit of a jerk. Brosnan always played the perfect polished English gentleman.
