Calling all the hero's for advice on 7750 build

Postby uldalembk » Mon Jan 18, 2010 12:11 am

Done a bit of clock restoration in the last few months, 1780 grandfather clock (well impressed myself, it was trashed, in pieces in my brothers pub, after £98 in bits and a bit of drilling, filling and a few new bushes hey presto it now runs again). 1940's mantel (easy after a clean and re oil). And built a new regulator with a Kieninger PS55 movement (sweet!).

So my next endeavor is to look at a 7750 based watch build. So far got this ear marked: http://www.ofrei.com/page1251.html. So I’m now looking for a movement (probably Ebay) and some advice.

From what I can gather removing the stem is fairly easy (so long as the crowns in the correct position!) I think I’ve worked out that it just needs cut to the correct length.
Fitting the hands - I’m assuming just means pushing them on with the shafts in the correct position (put them on centralise everything then adjust?) Someone please advise if I’m on the wrong track, can I do any damage here?

What I don’t know is:

How is the movement held in the case? Some holders have screw holes, so I’m assuming you need tabs and screws.

How is the dial held in or is it just held by the movement?

UB and Skidder at least seem to know a thing or two on this subject and I'm sure i've seen some advice elsewhere on this forum but can't seem to find it now. So any pointers are greatfully received.

I'm sorry. I know very little of building watches; I wish I did. Skidder's the guy, he'll tell you where to look, etc...UB

OK so not much help from you lot then!

I've read most of skidder's posts so I'm about to give it a go. The Ofrie cases are out of stock at the moment so i've ordered one from S&K in Germany, still waiting. I plan to do an idiots guide as I progress, or is that, the idiot plans to do a guide.

Case: http://www.andys-uhren-shop.de/oscommer ... ucts_id=42
Dial: http://www.andys-uhren-shop.de/oscommer ... cts_id=100

I've gone for a XXL just for a bit of fun, not sure if i'll leave the hands the plain black and white or not, might paint them.

Now I need to find a strap, still on the fence between a SS or a black leather, or both! And a movement.

So far - total bill = 126 Euro

Been thinking about the dial and hands. The blue on the crown and chrono pushers makes me think a little more than the red I was going for would look better.

I like that look for a chrono 8)

Too many have fussy sub dials which interfere with reading the main dial. The red and blue will make it stand out nicely from the normal military types.

Good luck with the build.

I look forward to your updates as that is something I have been considering doing myself.

Not sure how I missed this.....but it's something I'd like to have a go at someday!!

Think it looks better on the strap?!!

The dial looks ok, but the big bold numbers rather dominate the subdials which look a bit lost to me, but the idea is good :)

Let us know how you get on :D

A bit of a delay at present, the case seems to have got lost in transit! Its recorded as:
'The item was scanned in the inward office of exchange in Great Britain on Feb 22, 2010' and thats the last I've heard of it :(

The only thing I can think is that is got held up on a sample check at customs, they don't check everything that comes in in the EU I've read somewhere.

I'm not going to get the movement untill I have the case. So lesson one is delayed!
