C7 Quartz Chronograph, Do I or Don't I?

Post by gaf1958 »

A little while ago, I ordered a C7 quartz chronograph, then realised that it may not have the lovely hollow sculpted lugs that I was looking at in all the website photos. I raised a thread about it here:

http://www.christopherwardforum.com/vie ... 47#p675604

Fast forward a couple of weeks and the watch has arrived down under. As expected from the replies in my other thread, it does not have the hollowed out lugs that I had assumed all C7 models have. Oh well... I said back then that it would probably be heading back once I'd confirmed that to be the case. So...

The colour... I chose the green dial as, well ... I'm a sucker for a green dial. It's darker than it seems in the CW photos and is rather a teal green colour. It's a fabulous colour, much nicer than I was expecting. With the red accents it's very appealing to me.

I was particularly keen on the green dial, so that gave me a choice of just the one model. It doesn't have the hollow lugs, but it's a bit of a looker in my book. If I send it back, any other colour is going to be my second choice.

My question to myself is - does the lovely dial trump the lugs, or vice versa. For the moment I'm leaving the bracelet unsized until I make that decision.

In the meantime, here are a few photos of the new arrival as there's a paucity of C7 pics as yet, particularly the greenie...

Gary, I think the face is one of the primary reasons for buying a watch, the lugs are very much secondary. For that reason and the fact that it seems you love the dial, I say you should keep it.

It is indeed Patrick - and it's not as though the green is available as an automatic which has the other lugs. My thinking is that perhaps I could pick up a blue or black auto in a NN sale sometime in the next year or so...

I also think the hollow lugs are a secondary feature to the dial. The dial design is nice with a well defined chapter ring showing the seconds and a secondary ring with the tachymeter. If you like the dial color and layout and overall watch size I would be inclined to keep it. Hollow lugs might collect dirt and be harder to match with different bands, so they also have some downside beyond their immediate good looks. But ultimately it is your choice (of course).

For me Gary it was the case design and the lug design that made this watch interesting so I would get rid and pick one with the lugs you liked. The 3 hander cosc auto looked the pick to me.
Cheers now, Paul

Greetings,

Dial over lugs, always!

Agreed, it is a lovely shade of green.

Exactly my thoughts Gary.

Keep it and enjoy. Stunning shade of green that is not duplicated in your collection.

After all, the dial is what you primarily look at. How often do you angle your wrist, to look at the side aspect of the lugs, when you're wearing it?

I think the question you need to ask is: Would I have bought this watch anyway, if I'd known exactly what the lugs looked like?

Based on the website images... no.
Based on reality... yes.

I think there's an answer hiding in plain sight there. :)

It is. The green is much nicer in real life than in the photos.

A very good point Guy. The answer in truth, is probably only when I take the watch out of the box and before I put it on my wrist...

Hi,

I don't like some of the new C7s but that one is very nice. Fantastic shade of green.
Agree with what others said dial is the main thing for me too.

I do like the dial.

Gary I doubt if the lugs will bother you after a while - after all the next time you end up wearing it, based on rotation, will be months away! With retired blokes short term memory, it will be lugs, what lugs. :)

That's what initially got me interested in it Paul. The colour was what made me choose this model and I was very disappointed, even pi***d off when I learnt that the lugs were not what I thought.

My expectation was that it'd go back once it arrived, but the colour is stunning and I'm a sucker for a green dial.

My expectations have changed to a large extent to the point where I think it may well stay. I'll sleep on it, perhaps even for a couple of nights, but I think the little bugger has found a spot under my skin... It still has the same four part case design, but with solid lugs.

As long as it's not "Watch? What watch?". Then I'll really have something to worry about. :)

You are looking at the watch from the top most of the time. The lugs, while interesting, will not be seen much. I you like the dial ....keep it.
