C60 Trident 300 38mm spring bar thickness

Post by watchoo »

Hi all,

First post here, apology if it's already asked before, but my search didn't return the expected result.

I've just purchased a C60 Trident 300 38mm with metal bracelet, and decided to get a leather strap + some extra spring bars. Does anyone know the thickness (diameter) of the spring bar for this model?

Any help would be very appreciated. Thank you.

C60 Trident 300 38mm spring bar thickness

I don't own a 38mm model, but the 43mm uses 1.78mm bars which seems to be the standard across the larger sized models in the CW lineup. I would imagine the 38mm being a somewhat robust watch, would use the same 1.78mm diameter bars for strength, as the next size down is 1.5mm, which are nowhere near as strong.

If you're buying CW leather straps, they're usually supplied with spring bars. The quick release models have the bars built in.

@gaf1958, thanks for the info.

I'm buying a 3rd party leather strap, not CW strap.

Also, upon doing measurement with a simple ruler, seems that the bar is between 1.5 to 1.78 (anw I've read somewhere that 1.8 is actually 1.78). Unfortunately I don't have micrometer or any other precision measurement tool.

Anyone can help to confirm the size for me?

In that case, you may be able to ask the vendor to include spring bars. Leather straps can be sized to take different sized spring bars. I have some that will only take 1.5mm bars, others that will take 2.0mm ones - even a few where 2.5mm bars are far and away the best fit. Just because the standard bracelet takes (for example) 1.78mm bars, doesn't mean that any specific 20mm strap will be suited to those bars...

If they can't/won't supply bars, you can always ask them what diameter is recommended for the particular strap you're buying. Hopefully they will know.

Ah, I should have explained that my concern is actually more on the fit between the spring bar tips & lug holes :)

Reading here and there, I assume that, spring bar that is too small compared to the lug hole can wear out the lug hole unevenly, creating a notch like these:

This is what I want to avoid.

As for the leather strap, yeah I know that most of them can accept slightly bigger / smaller spring bars without problem.

Ahhh, I see. Can't help there, I'm interstate so no access to things...

I can recall it being an issue with certain Seiko divers as the 2.5mm Seiko "fat" bars have significantly larger diameter tips than most watches (1.1mm rings a bell, but I could be wildly wrong). I'm unsure if it's been an issue with CW or other watches that use the more common 1.78mm bars. I've no idea what diameter the tips are or should be.

Could you simply use the existing bars that are fitted to the bracelet?

Certainly, the stock spring bars which came with the original bracelet fit the leather strap nicely.

I just want to get some spares :)

Just a little update;

I decided to email Christopher Ward. Andrew's reply confirmed that, indeed C60 Trident 300 38mm also uses 1.78mm spring bars.

Hopefully this info can be helpful for others who have the same question.

Cheers.

Thanks for sharing the info, I wonder if the same size is used across the CW lineup. As a side note, an internet search for "1.78mm spring bar" returns many pages of hits, so it must be a common size used by many different watch makers.

One more finer question, I wonder if there is anything like an industry standard on the diameter of the lug hole drilled into watch cases? I might assume so given that the popular Bergeon 6767-F has a 0.8mm tip to use on drilled lugs, while the small fork to compress spring bars is 1.2mm.

1.78mm (or commonly mentioned as 1.8mm) is indeed a popular size.

I'm sure there are some sort of standard dimensions for these. Well, if not an "industry" standard, perhaps a "popular" standard instead, based on market demands.

A little update;

So I've purchased some generic 1.78mm diameter spring bars for my Trident from a local seller (Singapore).

The dimension is generally OK, but I found that the generic spring bars I bought have.. less compression tension (means it's easier to push & compress). The original Trident spring bar is way firmer (as in harder to press).

I'm not sure whether this translates into weaker holding power. Only time will tell.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like cheap and cheerful.

If the spring is weak it will be easier for it to work loose or fail when pressure is applied.

This could result in you losing the watch off your wrist. :problem:

Personally I wouldn't risk it.
